In a major train accident 125 people were killed and about 250 injured when 14 coaches of Indore-Patna Express derailed at Pukhraya in Kanpur at 3:10 em. Coaches 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56 along with four AC compartments and four general bogies were the worst affected especially the sleeper 53.
"Initially, lecals villagers rushed to the spot and started pulling out the people-both dead and injured-from the damaged coaches with the help of district police and fire department. They were later assisted by NDRS, NCC, NSS volunteers and school children. There were many people trapped inside 14 derailed coaches. Police teams from Kanpur were also rushed to the spot. Railway department ordered on inquiry into the accident. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had directed DGP Javeed Homeed to monitor the situation personally.
While the Railway Minister announced the compensation of Rs 3.5 lakh to the families of the dead, Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for those with minor injuries. President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav expressed profound grief over the loss of lives in the train tragedy.
