Brief Summary
Evans' o-level exam: It is the month of early March. The Governor of the H.M. Prison, Oxford called up to the secretary of the Examination Boord. He requested that a prisoner named Evans has started night classes in O Level German. Now he wants to attain examination. The Secretary replied that there is no need to be worry. All the necessary forms and other material would be sent. The officer was concerned about the prisoner. The Governor told the officer that Evans has no record of violence. Rather he is an amusing fellow. He was one of the stars at the Christmas concert. The Secretary asks the Governor to arrange a room where Evans can sit in for the examination. The Governor tells that the room of Evans can be used for this purpose. The Secretary agrees and tells that they would get a person from St. Mary Mags to invigilate.
Evans the Break: The Governor takes utmost care to that he would not be fooled. Every care was taken to make Evans prepare for the exam. He was tutored by a German teacher for 6 months. The day before the exam the teacher wishes good luck but makes it clear that he had hardly any 'chance of getting through. But Evans gives an ironical twist to the tutor's observation by saying "I may surprise everybody."
Precautions of the Prison Officials: On the day of the exam Jackson and Stephens visited Evan's cell and took away everything that may help him injure himself. Evans was insisted to take away the hat but he refused saying that it was lucky charm. The Governor of the prison had made sure that all precautions are taken to avoid any break Evans' nail scissors and file are taken away from him. His prison cell is fitted with a listening device with its receiver being in the Governor's room.
Reverend Stuart McLeery:Stuart McLeery, who was appointed the invigilator, left his home at 8:45am. He was carrying a small brown suitcase which contained all the needed items for the exam, a sealed question paper envelope, a yellow invigilation form, a paper knife, a Bible.
McLeery's suitcase is 'searched' in the prison. The presence of a small ring surprises the officers. Prison officer satisfy when they are informed that McLeery is suffering from piles and the rubber ring helps him in sitting in a particular position for a long time. Other hand in the prison, Stephens sets two table opposite each other and brings two chairs.
The Examination Begins at 9:25am: Evans is given necessary instructions by the invigilator like index number 313, centre number 271. Evans does not like the presence of Stephens in the cell so Governor calls him out. Finally, the examination starts at 9.25cm. During the examination, Evans is told about the correction on page three line fifteen by the invigilator as per instruction of the Assistant Secretary for Modern Languages. Stephen peeps into the cell and notices Evans with his pen between his lips, looking at the door. Evans requests for a blanket.
Evans Escapes from the Prison: The Governor instructs Stephens to accompany McLeery personally to the main gate. After that McLeery looked into the prison cell and shocked. He sees a man sprawled back in Evans's chair with the blanket from his shoulder. The front with blood and the same is still dripping from head. Stephens and Jackson think that it is McLeery who had been hit by Evans. Evans has escaped.
Injured McLeery tells prison authorities not to worry about him. He desperately tells the Governor about the photocopied sheet that had been superimposed over the last page of the question paper, where a few words were written in German. Detective Superintendent Carter swings into action. Injured McLeery is taken to the hospital.
The Furious Governor: The governor sculds his officers for behaving foolishly and calls them two morons because he had not made any call before examination. He tries to get in touch with Examinations Board. Thereafter, the Governor looks at the photocopied slip and thinks of Newbury. He consider leaving the question paper behind a mistake, because it is this that is going to lead him to 'Mr clever-clever Evans. When the Governor rings up the hospital, he finds that McLeery was not there. Now Governor is sure that something is terriblywrong. After sometime they find the real McLeery bound and gagged in his own room. He has been there since 8:15 am.
The final Escape: Evan escaped the prison the fourth time. But by taking the hint from the question paper the Governor reached the hotel where Evans was staying. He captured him and came to know how he planned his escape. Evans tells him that he has a lot of friends. The German teacher was one of them. Evans says he regrets when he cuts his long hair & beard. He mentioned rubber ring contained pig's blood! The Governor said that his game was over. Evans surrendered himself to the Governor. Evans was arrested by the Governor and taken to a van standing outside the hotel. Evans was handcuffed and taken in the van. The van moved from the hotel and after few moments, the prison officer opened Evan's handcuffs and told the driver to move fast. Evans suggests the driver to move towards Newbury. In this way, one more time he becomes successful make fool the prison officers.
